Roofs built to outlast the next Sydney storm

Ian’s crew has been patching, restoring and replacing Inner West roofs for over thirty years — terrace slate, terracotta tile, Colorbond and copper. Tell us what yours is doing and the estimator comes out to look, free.

One step ahead

Careful work, and someone who answers the phone

What separates us from the next roofer down the road is dull, unglamorous care: turning up when we said, keeping the site tidy, and explaining what we found before anyone touches a tile. Our tradesmen carry more than thirty years between them, and they have yet to meet a roof they couldn’t sort out.

Small repairs, heritage re-roofs, whole streets of terraces — the work is the same either way. Our estimator quotes tile, metal and slate for free, and you can book that visit in about a minute.

What we take on

Three ways we fix a roof

Sometimes it is one cracked tile. Sometimes the whole thing has to come off. We will tell you which one you are looking at, even when the answer costs us the bigger job.

Free, and no sales pitch

Book the inspection, get it in writing

Four details is all we need to call you back. If water is coming in today, ring the mobile instead and we will work out how to get someone there.

  1. 01You send the four details
  2. 02We ring you to pick a time that suits
  3. 03The estimator climbs up, photographs the problem and prices it

Know what is over your head

Three roofs, three temperaments

Nearly every Inner West roof is one of these. Each behaves differently when it ages, and each wants a different pair of hands. Scroll sideways.

Terracotta & concrete tile

01
Ridge of an aged terracotta tile roof seen from below
Fifty years, easily
Kept in good bedding and pointing, a tile roof outlives most renovations.
Shrugs off weather
Wind, hail and the heavy rain Sydney now gets in bursts.
Cooler summers
Thermal mass helps the house hold an even temperature.
Watch the cement
The tiles rarely fail first — the mortar between them does.

Steel & Colorbond

02
Close view of profiled steel roof sheeting and a sealed fixing screw
Light on the frame
A fraction of the weight of tile, which suits older timber structures.
Reflects the heat
Light colours push summer sun back off the house.
Fast to lay
Long sheets mean fewer joins and a shorter time open to the weather.
Recycled and recyclable
Made from recycled steel, and fully recyclable when it eventually comes off.

Slate, new & salvaged

03
Multi-coloured slate roof on a brick and timber heritage building
A century of service
Stone does not rot, warp or interest insects. Maintained slate passes 100 years.
Colour that never fades
Greys, blacks, greens, purples and reds, straight out of the quarry.
Right for a terrace
Copper clips hold each slate and keep a heritage roof authentic.
Needs a specialist
Slipped slate is the usual fault, and re-laying it is a trade of its own.

Repairs, in detail

Where Inner West roofs actually fail

Three materials, three weak points. Knowing which one you are dealing with is usually the difference between a morning’s work and a whole new roof.

01 — Metal & Colorbond

Fixings and flashings first

Rust creeping out of a screw line, sheets lifted by wind, valleys and ridges that no longer sit flat, skylights weeping at the edges. Almost none of it needs a new roof — it needs someone who knows where water travels.

02 — Slate

Usually a slipped slate

The fussy one, and good slate roofers are thin on the ground. A leak is far more often stone that has slid than stone that has failed, so we lift it, re-clip in copper and replace only what is broken.

03 — Tile

The cement goes long before the tile

Old mortar crumbles into the gutter, blocks the down pipe and leaves tiles sitting loose — which is how you end up with water inside and an overflowing gutter in the same storm.

Metal, tile, slate, copper — we have someone whose whole trade is that one material.

Ian’s Inner West Roofing covers the lot: leak chasing, re-roofing, tile, slate, metal, copper and zinc — from the first bit of advice on products and finishes through to the day the scaffold comes down.

On a tile roof we handle

  • Cracked and broken tiles swapped out
  • Valleys and ridges repaired or replaced
  • Rebedding and repointing, ridge to eave
  • Gutters and down pipes cleared and re-hung

Reviews we had no hand in writing

I recently hired Ian and his team for work on my home, and I couldn’t be happier with the results — from the very first quote to the final cleanup. Professional, honest and incredibly skilled. They arrived on time, explained everything clearly, and used high-quality materials that look fantastic. I’ve already recommended him to my neighbours.

The team promptly diagnosed the problem, planned the repair, came on time and cleaned up. The roof looks great and no longer leaks. I have no hesitation in recommending Ian’s Inner West Roofing.

Michael Maley Google review

I had Ian come out to cap a couple of chimneys on my double storey house in Tempe. He and his team did an amazing job at a great price point. Communication and service were both amazing. Highly recommended.

AlexTempe Google review

We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Inner West Roofing to anyone needing roof or gutter work. Ian has been to our home himself on many occasions, often out of hours and on weekends. They are punctual, friendly and very professional, and their communication has been great.

AngelaClovelly Client

Ian’s Roofing workmanship is to the highest standard. They have repaired a large amount of water ingress issues for the buildings I manage. The service from Maria and Lee is next to none and one of the best in the industry.
